When Erik Knotts, a 10-year-old from Cleveland, was about 18-months old, he developed a severe bacterial infection called meningococcemia. He was admitted at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, where the caring staff fought to save his life.
Erik was in intensive care four weeks before the infection and blood clotting his legs became so severe that doctors were forced to amputate his legs in order to save his life. Altogether, Erik was in the hospital for 62 days and underwent nearly a dozen surgeries.
Since that time, Erik’s accomplishments have been extraordinary. He took his first unassisted steps less than a year after his first surgery. He loves sports and participates in soccer and baseball leagues every year. At the age of seven, Erik began taking golf lessons and has become a skilled golfer. His real passion, however, is sled hockey, a recognized Paralympic Sport. Erik is a proud member of the Cleveland Mighty Barons Sled Hockey team.
