Super Bowl Matchup Nightmare for Jet Fans

It is a Super Bowl nightmare for green-with-envy Jets fans.

But if forced to pick a winner in Sunday's big game, many prefer it be New England, as they will reluctantly back the hated Patriots over the Giants in Super Bowl XLVI.

"This is a Jets fan's worst nightmare," said Ken Pikowski, a Freehold, N.J., landscaper.

"I hate to say it, but I guess I have to pick New England. If the Giants win, it'll be like the Jets are back at the old Giants Stadium and paying rent as second-class citizens.

"To keep any dignity, we can't have the slogan for our new home stadium saying 'Welcome to MetLife Stadium, home of the Super Bowl Champion Giants,'" Pikowski added.

Fellow Jets fan Joseph Callahan, a Queens construction worker, said he openly rooted the Giants to a Super Bowl victory over the Patriots four years ago, but this time, he is leaning toward his AFC East rivals.

"[The Giants] basically knocked us out of the playoffs this year and have since been going out of their way to take cheap shots at the Jets, whether it's on Twitter or the newspapers," Callahan said.

But some Jets fans say they just cannot deal with Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, quarterback Tom Brady and company winning a fourth title in 10 years.

"These are the worst two teams we can have in the game, but there's not even a question in my mind that I will go for the Giants," said Kevin Daunt, a Staten Island longshoreman and former Jets season-ticket holder.

"I hate the Patriots, and as much as we (the Jets) underachieved this year, the Giants have overachieved. They really got their act together and are a class organization."

David Levy, a Jets fan from Belleville, N.J., joked that he is rooting for Big Blue because he does not want to feel the wrath of his in-laws, who are big-time Giants fans.

"It's like rooting for the lesser of two evils," Levy said. "I might not be a Giants fan, but I can never be a Patriots fan."

And then there are Jets fans too upset to think about picking a winner.

"Fireman Ed" Anzalone, who has led the J-E-T-S chants at home games for decades, declined comment, telling a reporter via text message, "I really have nothing to say positive, so I will say nothing. Thanks. Go Jets!" Read more:NYPost
