The New York Yankees announced Tuesday they have signed Brian Cashman to a new three-year contract as senior vice president and general manager.
The deal keeps the 44-year-old Cashman in the post that he has held since February 1998. During that time, the Yankees have won four World Series titles and made the playoffs in all but one season.
Cashman has been with the Yankees since 1986 when he started as a 19-year-old intern in the club's Minor League and Scouting Department.
Cashman, whose previous three-year contract expired Monday, is the longest-serving Yankees general manager since Ed Barrow's 25-year run that ended in 1945. He is also the longest-tenured GM in the American League.
The signing comes on the heels of the Yankees succeeding in their top offseason priority, locking up lefty ace CC Sabathia to a contract extension.
Sabathia had until the end of Monday to opt out of the remaining four years and $92 million on his contract and become a free agent. The new contract adds a fifth year and makes the deal worth $122 million.
