We joined Dietician Robyn Flipse on a supermarket safari hunting for healthy bargains! at the Fairway Grocery Store in Paramus. Not all fruit is equal so it's good to know which one's your child's favorite.
That's Robyn's School Lunch Rule Number One -- If they like it, they will eat it! So ask them! Just wait til we show you Robyn's apple cutting secret! Meanwhile, Rule Number Two -- Don't buy more than they can eat!
Now, let's get snackin'! Robyn's Rule Number Three -- Mix it up!Ever hear of squirrel mix?
Robyn says, "Its easy to nibble on. Put nuts in it, some dried fruit, mini marsh or raisinettes and put together combos the kids like."
Rule Number Four -- Get kinky with sandwiches!
Robyn tells us, "Whole wheat buns we're gonna fill up in a fun way so kids will enjoy hotdogs without the dog"
Hold the dog but grab a frozen veggie patty! Here's Robyn's Rule Number Five -- To keep lunch chilled pack frozen juice boxes or yogurt and wrap food in foil or plastic.
We didn't buy a lotyou recognize most of these items. The magic's in how you put em together. Robyn's gonna fill three lunchboxes for under $4 each.
LUNCH ONE -- tomato and string cheese kebabs -- a peanut butter and banana sandwich -- on a hotdog roll -- and a frozen juice box! Total cost: $2.78.
LUNCH TWO -- turkey and provolone on a hotdog roll -- a frozen crinkle carrot snack -- and an apple! The secret -- you SLICE it -- sideways! This lunch costs $3.81.
LUNCH THREE -- get that frozen veggie patty - and nuke it! Top it with provolone -- put it on round bread -- and you've got a little pizza burger! Add fruit, a frozen yogurt and lunch three ready -- for just $2.97!!
