South NJ Home Standoff Ends In Man's Death

Authorities say a standoff at a southern New Jersey home ended when a man inside the residence fatally shot himself.

The Press of Atlantic City (http://bit.ly/xcDVOy) reports that Ocean City police went to the home late Tuesday morning to check on the man's welfare after receiving a call from one of his relatives who lives in another state. The relative said she had received a suicide note in the mail.

Officers found the man, whose name was not disclosed, in a back bedroom with a gun pointed at his chest. Neighboring homes were then evacuated as a precaution while officials urged the man to surrender his weapon.

But he eventually shot himself shortly before 1 p.m. and was declared dead at the scene.
