MY9TV.com - A New Jersey college professor is at the center of controversy.
It's over a comment she made to a student who has a stuttering issue.
Christine Persichette reports.
Philip Garber looks like your average student. He's nothing but. First off- the 16 year old is so bright- he takes college courses here at the County College of Morris. Second- he has a disability- he stutters.

Philip Garber says:
"People that stutter- we are people too."

It takes a little longer for Philip to say what he wants to say- apparently too long for a professor here. After just 3 classes Philip says the professor told him not to speak during class so he doesn't infringe on other students' time.

"That's just absurd."

So Philip complained and was switched to a different class.

Dr. Edward Yaw, College President, says: "What happened in Philip's classroom was unacceptable."

Kathleen Palatucci- a speech therapist at St. Clare's Hospital- says Philip is unique because most teens who stutter are reluctant to speak in class. She hopes his experience will help to educate others.

Kathleen Palatucci says: "To bring more awareness to this disability and to help people understand how to communicate."

The college president wouldn't discuss whether or not the professor will be disciplined- but Philip says he'd proudly be the strongest voice for her to keep her job. In Randolph, Christine Persichette, The 10 O'Clock News.
