MY9TV.COM - Some students are now feeling the effects of Irene.
And next summer too!
That's because Irene has delayed school openings across New Jersey.
Christine Persichette reports.

Instead of setting up classrooms for the start of school many are clearing them out at Brookside Place School in Cranford. Flooding from Hurricane Irene caused extensive damage there and at the local high school. Add to that, the damage at people's homes and the first day of school has been pushed back until next week.

One parent, Cathy Triano says the delayed opening gives them some much needed time, because with everything going on they weren't exactly ready for back to school..

She tells us, "Like we said this morning we couldn't sharpen pencils because the pencil sharpener was in the basement floating and sports is starting this weekend and all their equipment was in the basement so it's all gone."

In Lodi, classes got underway at Washington School, 5 days later than other schools in the district because of flooding.

And in Ridgewood, schools in, but sports are out, at least for now. Irene tackled the high school's turf field displacing athletes until it's fixed..

No word yet on when that athletic field will be fixed. As for the schools with delayed openings most will make up the days at the end of the school year. I'm Christine Persichette, The 10 O'Clock News.
