One agenda item on the Texas State Board of Education meetings this week could have major implications for the entire nation. The battle over potential changes to the Social Studies curriculum has begun.

What goes in and what gets thrown out is causing some controversy. The issue isn't just facing Texas students, but the entire nation because over 90 percent of American textbooks are based on Texas curriculum. Texas is one of the largest buyers of textbooks, which means what they buy, impacts other states.

Among some of the contested subjects to be debated will be the Vietnam War, the Korean War, the Civil Rights movement, the Cold War, Reconstruction and the Great Depression.

The 15 member board will not vote on the changes until this May.
