(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - People around the world have stepped up with contributions to Japan after the island nation was devastated by an earthquake a few weeks ago. However, one lucky bidder is raising a glass of pricey Scotch whiskey all in the name of charity.
According to reports from BBC , a 70-year-old malt was donated by Gordon & MacPhail , a company specializing in Scotch whiskey. The buyer, who wished to remain anonymous, paid $24,000 for the 1940 Generations Glenlivet in an auction at Bonhams in Edinburgh, Scotland.
Michael Urquhart, Gordon & MacPhail's joint managing director, told the BBC the donation and action was their way to "do something practical."
"Gordon & MacPhail has had trading relationships with Japan for over 30 years and members of our family-owned business felt it was important to show our support and raise funds to aid the relief," Urquhart said.
Other companies and celebrities from around the world have also auctioned off some surprising items to help Japan.
Tenkara USA, a manufacturer of fly fishing rods, is auctioning off an assortment of their products to help Japan. Backpackflyfishing.com reported the haul is worth $425.
According to reports from CrunchGear , Cannon will auction off four new T3 cameras at the company's Fashion Week events, with proceeds going to Japan.
Some of the biggest names in pop music have also made some contributions from Japan relief.
FOX News reported the Black Eyed Peas have dedicated their video for their song "Just Can't Get Enough," to the people of Japan, where it was recorded just one week before the earthquake and tsunami hit.
Gwen Stefani also has a benefit auction in the works, according to the FOX report. Stefani has reportedly donated $1 million to Save the Children since the quake.
More than 30 musicians contributed to "Songs for Japan," a benefit album available through iTunes. Collaborators include Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé.
If you'd like to add your name to the lists of companies and personalities helping victims of the earthquake and tsunami, you can text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation to the American Red Cross . Funds will support disaster relief efforts.
