Greening of Baby

April 18, 2008

Baby is going green, and it’s all about bamboo.

A new website, launched by two Enn-Jay entrepreneurs, sells baby clothes made of bamboo fiber. We hear it’s a great way to wrap up your precious bundle.

On www.babybambu.com all of the baby basics are made from bamboo. The fabric is soft but durable, and wicks away moisture. Website co-creator Cort Bucher says that best of all, it’s inherently anti-bacterial. And completely bio-degradable.

Bucher — who has no children and runs the business from his basement in Paramus — got the idea of using bamboo for infants’ clothing after he read about a company making bamboo fiber undergarments for menopausal women. He decided on creating infants’ clothing because the designs are mostly simple and classic, not trendy.

You can buy onesies, hats, blankets and socks on the website. They come in bamboo green (of course) white, and other pastels. All sport the signature panda logo Butcher and his partner Gwen Gallagher, of Ewing, are also developing a line of upscale bamboo sweaters and pants for infants and toddlers, which will be sold in baby boutiques across the country.

Bucher says the challenge is educating consumers about the benefits of using bamboo fiber. “A lot of people have still not heard about it, and if they have, they don’t know the benefits of having it.”

Earth Day 2008 approaches and we thought you’d like to know that even babies can be green, thanks to these Baby Bambu folks who had a good idea, and great timing.
