Weekend Picks: High Summer!

July, 17 2008

It’s high summer, those hot days in mid-July, halfway between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The Jersey Shore is, of course, full of activity.

The Wildwoods are having their 20th annual Christmas in July this Saturday. Santa Claus is in town, believe it or not, riding the beach tram and giving out candy canes starting at 1 p.m., Beach and 15th Avenue, North Wildwood. Then starting at 7 boats decorated in Christmas lights parade from the back bays in North Wildwood to Sunset Lake in Wildwood Crest. Fireworks at 9:30 over the lake.

In Margate, Lucy the Elephant celebrates her 125th birthday on Sunday with a carnival, tours and food. Proceeds go to give this National Historic Landmark a new paint job.

LBI: There’s a Magic of the Night show at Fantasy Island Amusement Park in Beach Haven, featuring illusionists John Bundy and Morgan. Shows at 7:30, 8:30, and 9:30 p.m.

To the north and a little inland Toms River is having its 6th annual New Jersey Ice Cream Festival, as ice cream shops from throughout the state compete for your vote for best ice cream. Saturday, Washington St. 11 a.m - 5 p.m. Also: games, rides, food and entertainment.

Even further north but right on the beach, Enn-Jay’s most popular cover band The Nerds play at Festival Plaza in the trendy Pier Village shopping center, Long Branch. Tonight at 7.

Beyond the Shore, it’s high summer too.

Relive history while taking in views of the Manhattan skyline and the dramatic cliffs of the New Jersey Palisades. Check out the British 22nd Regiment of Foot encamped near Mrs. Kearney's Tavern, the authentic 19th-century Hudson River inn, at the Alpine Boat Basin and Picnic Area, Saturday & Sunday.

In historic downtown Burlington it’s Black Family Heritage Festival all weekend. There’s a jazz concert tomorrow night, then all day Saturday and Sunday there’s a carnival, parade and health fair along the Riverfront Promenade.

You can go enjoy the countryside, music, fireworks, fine food, and wine at the annual Summerfest at Alba Vineyard in Finesville. Fireworks by Garden State Fireworks, three-time world champion pyrotechnic artists

Or celebrate the history and mysticism of the Sourland Mountains at the Sourland Music Fest, Saturday 2 – 11 p.m. in Hillsborough. Are these mountains really haunted?
