Ten Thousand Steps

When you open this e-mail, look carefully at the people in your office. You might just see something bulging at their beltlines.
The pedometer is the new, must-have accessory for the weight-conscious. The little device calculates the distance you walk based on the number of steps you take.
So many new best-sellers are advocating walking for health and weight control. The authors write that walking 10,000 steps, or the rough equivalent of five miles per day, plus a sensible diet, can take off a pound a week.
Some opt for two or three miles on the treadmill and wear the pedometer to measure the rest of their normal activity, like climbing up and down steps, going to the supermarket, the trip from the bus to the office. Surprisingly, these little walks often add up to more than two miles every day.
Still, there are those who want to power walk the 10,000 steps. Where do you find a good five-mile loop in New Jersey?

We want to know about your favorite long distance walks. We don’t want dangerous roads, steep hills, or boring scenery.
We found the Boulevard in Mountain Lakes four plus miles from end to end. A double loop ‘round Brookdale Park in Montclair and Bloomfield gets you close to four miles.
Here’s a website with a fair amount of walking trails in several counties: www.njtrails.org/index.php.
Many of you are doing that five mile jaunt everyday, and we’d like to hear where you go; click on the “Email the Editor” link at the bottom of this newsletter, and send us a note. We’ll share your walks with our readers.
Strap on the pedometer, plug in the iPod, and start counting those steps. We’re with you every step of the way.
