Scary Good Treats

October 29, 2007

This week we found some New Jersey candy stores with Halloween treats that are scary good.

When we walked into Brummer’s Homemade Chocolates in Westfield (www.westfieldtoday.com/Brummers.html) owner George Brummer was displaying his Halloween goodies including chocolate bats, scarecrows, witches and cats. They’re melt- in-your-mouth delicious.

But for us the sweetest feat was Brummer’s Great Pumpkin. You’ll want this with its homemade white chocolate, colored orange, in your patch for Halloween.

The Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory (www.rmcf.com), with seven locations around New Jersey, also produces tons of chocolate Halloween goodies. One of their core products is amazing candy apples, the kind that make a great party snack.

Long Branch store manager Paul Macolino sweet-talked us about everything from the “sure favorite” basic caramel, to apples dipped in five layers of chocolate and candy drippings, to Halloween apples flavored with pumpkin pie spice or topped with sugary vampires.

Lastly, we checked out family-owned Zigarelli Chocolates in East Hanover (www.zigarellichocolates.com), where the homemade chocolate is outstanding.

You won’t see this on their website, but there was plenty of Halloween spirit. Like solid chocolate lollipops shaped like scary creatures and witches. Or Rice Krispies treats topped in fall colors. Or chocolate-covered pretzel rods and pretzel twists with 14 different toppings. Our thanks to Owner Rosalie Gennarelli for all the festive ways to indulge.

Now the trick is choosing from all of these great treats!
