Rosie’s Food Bytes: Talking Turkey

November 7 2007

Turkey Day is coming and this week our food editor Rosalie Saferstein has suggestions to make preparing for Thanksgiving stress free.

BUY IT

Natural heirloom or free-range turkeys, gravy, soups and pies are available at Griggstown Quail Farm and Market, Princeton (www.griggstownquailfarm.com). UPS next day delivery available.

From cream of mushroom soup to pumpkin pie, the gourmet department at Gary’s Wine & Marketplace, Madison and Bernardsville (www.garysmarket.com) can make your Thanksgiving trouble free. D’Artagnan fresh, free range turkeys can also be pre-ordered.

LEARN IT

Turkey with cognac gravy and other tempting treats will be demonstrated by Rick Rodgers, author of “Thanksgiving 101” at Kings Bedminster on November 9 and Kings Short Hills on November 16 (www.kingscookingstudio.com). November 17 Rodgers will be at Chef Central, Paramus (www.chefcentral.com).

Also November 17, little pilgrims ages 3 to 10 can learn about the foods of the Indians at Cook ’N’ Tell, Colts Neck (www.cookntell.com).

And on November 16, a “Perfect Wines for the Holidays” class taught by George Staikos will be held at Fairchild’s Market, Roseland. (www.theeducatedgrape.com).

RESERVE IT

Make a reservation at The Frog and the Peach, New Brunswick (www.frogandpeach.com) and after your dinner opt for “leftovers to go,” a generous portion for two of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, and cranberry sauce.

CONCLUDE IT

Three-nut cranberry pie and other holiday inspired desserts are available at Mara’s Desserts, Morristown, Denville or Westwood (www.marasdesserts.com).

Send your guests home with whimsical Thanksgiving “top hats”—chocolate-covered marshmallows on a stick, topped with an edible sugar pumpkin. Offered online by Yummie. (www.yummiecookies.com).

Finally, ENJOY IT!
