Red Bank Heroes

December 7, 2007

Red Bank is our new favorite hangout.

We like the super strong coffee at Zebu Forno (www.zebuforno.com). We crave the shoes and handbags at Coco Pari (www.cocopari.com) and the designer pooch sunglasses at Paw Palace (www.pawpalaceonline.com).

And we love to go looking for celebrities while flipping through an amazing collection of vintage comic books and ogling a mini movie back lot.

Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash (www.jayandsilentbob.com) has become an international tourist destination. This is director Kevin Smith’s store—and an over-the-top shrine for his fans. Smith, a Red Bank native, has loaded the place with vintage comics, giant props from his films, autographed copies of his books, and swag that ranges from tee shirts to inaction figures from his cult classic film Clerks.

Smith’s latest film in production, Zack & Miri Make A Porno, stars two red-hot comedy actors: Knocked Up’s Seth Rogen, and Elizabeth Banks of The 40-Year-Old Virgin. It’s not unimaginable to think you might bump into this pair at a production meeting at the downtown offices for View Askew (www.viewaskew.com), Smith’s film company.

The town has played the backdrop in some of Smith’s best known films, including Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. Big stars like Smith favorites Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Jason Lee have all been known to drop by the stores and restaurants here.

Smith himself is renowned for his approachability; he will mingle with fans for hours, entertaining them with raw language and graphic humor.

When you visit Red Bank, go star-spotting on Broad Street but leave time to check out Smith’s Stash. Don’t forget to take something home to your hero.
