One Last Blast

August 28, 2007

So you haven’t booked a room at the Shore for this weekend…and you are content to let the last blast of summer ’07 slip away without scrunching any more sand between your toes?

Think again. Here are five good reasons to re-set your compass due east.

How about an out-of-the way beach—close to Seaside Heights. What? Peace and quiet near Seaside?

Yep. Drive south past the boardwalk teeming with teenagers and into Island Beach State Park. Lots of greenery—it’s the Shore before development. But people know about it so most of its beaches are relatively crowded. Not ours, though.

Half a mile after you enter the gates, look for a maintenance yard on the left. Park in the small public lot across the road, walk toward the complex and look for an unmarked footpath. It takes you past some of the Shore’s most spectacular dunes, and ends on a beach that, say our sources, usually has only a couple other people.

Our to-do list this weekend also includes Spring Lake, the “Irish Riviera,” where the artist who celebrates Ireland, painter Philip Gray (www.philipgray.com), is visiting. He will be signing some limited editions at the Irish Centre Sunday (www.irishcentre.net).

Shore shoppers are already buzzing about Jenna & Molly in Long Branch’s Pier Village (www.piervillage.com). Mom and daughter co-own this fun boutique with chic yet budget-conscious fashions that span both their age groups.

Need someplace to show off your new clothes? If you click into www.jersey2night.com you can join the Shore’s biggest parties. This upstart website has an MTV-like crew cruising bars along the Shore, finding the hottest spots to float your boat.

Finally, join a celebration of the red, ripe, and juicy. The annual West Cape May Tomato Festival (www.capemay.com) on Saturday celebrates the finest Jersey fresh specimens from local farmers.
