Weekend Picks: All That Jazz
September 6, 2007
Summer is over, but this weekend is absolutely packed with things to do.
One of the big events is the Liberty Jazz Festival, with a world-class lineup that includes George Benson and Chuck Mangione on Saturday, Branford Marsalis Sunday. It’s at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. Prices $49.50-$179. 1-888-556-JAZZ or www.cd1019.com/feature/liberty_jazz07.aspx
It’s also the first weekend of the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s autumn season, with a performance of the 1948 Pulitzer Prize winner The Time of Your Life by William Saroyan. On stage through Sept. 30 at the F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre in Madison. Tickets $28-$52; discount packages also available. Call 973-408-5600 or visit www.ShakespeareNJ.org.
For art you can get your hands on, try the hands-on art workshops at the open house at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey (www.njcva.org) in Summit, Saturday noon-4 p.m. There’s also an exhibit by artist Peter Williams.
Or, stretch your weekend into Monday to play golf and raise money for the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Foundation’s Children’s Health Fund. Tee time 11 a.m. at Tournament Players Club at Jasna Polana (www.tpcatjasnapolana.com) in Princeton, followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Registration: www.rwjuhfdn.org/JasnaGolf
Busy Saturday in Burlington. Starting at 9 a.m. there’s the 37th annual Wood Street Fair, with arts and crafts in the historic district; from 3 to 9 p.m. there’s the Riverfront Jazz Festival, free admission; and all weekend long the A. J. Meerwald (www.ajmeerwald.org), a renovated Delaware Bay oyster schooner, is at the City Boat Dock to take visitor sailing the Delaware River. Check www.tourburlington.org. 800-485-3072 for sailing reservations.
We even have activity down the Shore, post-Labor Day: food, and crafts at a street fair Sunday in Red Bank to benefit the local fire department (www.redbankrivercenter.org/index.cfm) and the 9th Annual Beach Plum Festival Saturday at Island Beach State Park (www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/island.html or www.islandbeachnj.org).
And this looks pretty good: More than a dozen biodynamic farms in northwestern New Jersey open up on Saturday to visitors who want to enjoy the mountain scene and taste locally grown fruits and vegetables, artisanal cheeses, grass-fed beef, organic eggs and poultry, specialty honeys, healthy breads. For participating farms, check www.buyfreshnwj.org.
Now, don’t say there’s nothing to do this weekend!
