Homecoming Weekend Picks
September 13, 2007
This Saturday is the first homecoming since a certain college football team hit the big time and kicked off Rutgersmania in the state. Kickoff against Norfolk State is 3:30, but tailgating starts noonish, with lots of alumni expected even if they have no game tickets. If you don’t know anyone tailgating, head to the Rutgers Alumni Association’s festivities on the “E” practice fields between the Bubble and Yurcak Field, off Frelinghuysen Road. Those of us of a certain age will remember the football rivalry between Rutgers and Princeton. Some of us may even have swiped a goalpost or two on a Saturday afternoon long ago. The two schools have gone their separate ways athletically, but you can head Princeton way for the Palmer Square Jazzfeast Saturday. Expect open-air performances, food from area restaurants, and great shopping on historic Palmer Square and Nassau Street. Noon-6 p.m., www.palmersquare.com.
Saturday is also the start of the five-day Cape May Food & Wine Festival. New Jersey’s unofficial restaurant capital hosts wine tastings, gourmet luncheons, a beer-tasting dinner, and a chefs’ dine-arounds, with each course of a meal served in one of Cape May’s acclaimed restaurants. Call (609) 884-5404 or go to www.capemaymac.org.
Saturday, too, NJPAC turns ten. They celebrate their first decade with a free outdoor celebration in Newark featuring the Big Apple Circus’ Circus to Go. Circus shows start at noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. In between here will be strolling artists, interactive workshops, free health screenings and an “Instrument Petting Zoo” with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. Hit www.njpac.org.
And if you still can’t be pried away from summer at the Shore, a big party is the 30th Annual Festival of the Sea Sunday in Point Pleasant Beach (www.pointpleasantbeachnj.com). They’re having food, music and booths with crafts and antiques starting at 10 in the morning. Fireworks go off at dark.
Football, the arts, great wine and food. Plenty to do this weekend- enjoy!
