The Long Paws

If you live in East Hanover, you might have wondered where your neighbors were this past Sunday—and even stranger, what happened to their dogs?
We found hundreds of them in one place, Lurker Park, trying to break the Guinness Book of World Records for the most dogs sitting and staying in place for two consecutive minutes.
Try keeping your dog from moving for thirty seconds. It takes a combination of skill and bribery, mostly the latter. Biscuits and other treats were used to distract and placate the panting pooches, as the Guinness team recorded the event for posterity.
The day entitled Mutts Mania: The Day The Dogs Stood Still, was a good humored benefit for the Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter (www.njshelter.org) and was well publicized in advance, including by NJ My Way in last Thursday’s Weekend Picks article.
The dogs and their people wanted to socialize. Poodle ogled pointer, Lab looked at Rott, kids wriggled on the ground and everyone tried to stay cool in the late September sunshine.
We won’t keep you in suspense. The sturdy group set the “New Jersey record” as 153 dogs sat or stood quietly. When it was over, they (and their owners) posed patiently for a group picture and high-tailed it to the barking lot.
By late afternoon, the residents and the resident dogs of East Hanover were back home. Tongues and tails are still wagging as they re-live the two minutes that will live forever in the world record books, New Jersey division.
