Weekend Picks: Chow Down!

No matter that it’s past summer. LBI will be jammed for Chowderfest Weekend (www.chowderfest.com). Listen to live music or shop for bargains from local merchants under the big tent in Beach Haven, then on Sunday vote to select a winner of the 19th annual Chowder Cook-off Classic!
There’s also plenty of street action at the Hoboken Fall Arts and Music Festival, featuring The Bongos and other bands that created the “Hoboken Sound” in the early 1980s. It’s Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Check www.hobokeni.com.
The best of the boating world is on display at the Liberty Boat Show, beginning today, and continuing all weekend at the Liberty Landing Marina in Jersey City. Check out everything from a weekend family boat, to a loaded multi-million dollar yacht. You can even take one for a test drive on the Hudson! www.libertyboatshow.com.
At Military Park in Newark tomorrow eat at the Foodtopia Festival, starting 11 a.m. www.downtownnewark.com). Or dance at NJPAC’S Brick City Swing (www.njpac.org) on Saturday. Each of the Center’s different performance spaces features different dance music including disco, old school Motown, roadhouse boogie and salsa.
There’s music in New Brunswick, too, where our friend and eight-time Grammy-winner Paquito D’Rivera (www.paquitodrivera.com) brings his unique blend of jazz, Latin rhythms and classical chamber music to the New Jersey Jazz Festival, at the State Theater. Still in Trenton, the world famous Lipizzaner stallions (www.lipizzaner.com) perform their intricate equine ballet at Sovereign Bank Arena (tickets: www.sovereignbankarena.com tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
Another Shore tradition is the 25th annual Ocean County Decoy and Gunning Show, in Tuckerton. They’ll celebrate Barnegat Bay’s waterfowling heritage with duck-calling contests, a boat-building challenge, a retrieving competition for dogs.
