TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A state Senate committee is
looking into the oversight of New Jersey's privately run halfway houses.
The Legislative Oversight panel hearing scheduled for Thursday comes in the
wake of a series of reports that found drugs, gang activity and violence are
rampant at some of the institutions.
The committee has invited managers of some of the facilities to testify at
the hearing, as well as independent experts.
An Assembly committee is scheduled to take up the issue next week.
The New York Times spent 10 months investigating the halfway houses before
publishing a series of articles about them last month.
