HACKENSACK, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey man accused of
fatally stabbing his estranged wife and then trying to flee to his native
Colombia has been indicted on numerous charges, including felony murder and
sexual assault.
A Bergen County grand jury recently handed up the 12-count indictment against
Pedro Gutierrez of Teaneck.
Prosecutors say Gutierrez allegedly attacked 23-year-old Shaday Betancourth
in her Teaneck home last October. Betancourth had been living in Columbia, but
had returned to Teaneck in order to finalize the couple's divorce.
Gutierrez then flew from New York City to Florida, just hours after
Betancourth was stabbed. He was minutes away from boarding another flight from
Florida to Colombia when he was arrested by customs agents.
Gutierrez, who faces life in prison if convicted, remains jailed on $3
million bail.
