TRENTON, N.J. (AP) —No more life in the fast lane for New Jersey state troopers during police
escorts.
A new five-page policy emphasizes public safety when troopers escort vehicles
down highways.
The policy, obtained by The Star-Ledger of Newark (http://bit.ly/NWqCK3 ), requires three
supervisors to consider several factors before approving escorts. Once approved,
troopers must obey speed limits and traffic laws and avoid passing lanes.
The policy comes after troopers led luxury cars down the Garden State Parkway
at speeds which exceeded 100 mph.
Two troopers involved in that escort were charged after state prosecutors
said they sought to conceal their involvement in the escort by using tape to
alter their license plates.
