Mayor Michael Bloomberg's plan to ban the sale of big-sized sodas and other sugary drinks got the approval of the city's Board of Health Thursday.
"The proposed limitation on sugary drink portion size has been approved by the Board of Health. 8 for, 0 against, 1 abstention," according to @nycHealthy, a Twitter account for the NYC Health Department.
The regulations was the latest in the city's efforts to prod residents to live healthier. It bars sales of sugar-heavy drinks in more than 16-ounce cups or containers in restaurants, movie theaters and some other settings.
Advocates include Mayor Michael Bloomberg and a roster of doctors. They say the plan strikes at a leading cause of obesity.
"Six months from today, our city will be an even healthier place," said Bloomberg via Twitter @MikeBloomberg.
Some critics say the ban is not the solution to combating obesity.
"We need about 6-9 teaspoons of sugar a day, but we're taking in 22 teaspoons a day. My concerns are that people don't like this stuff legislated. It tends to make people not make healthier choices because they don't like to be told what to do," nutritionist and author Cynthia Sass said on Thursday's Good Day New York.
The Board of Health decision may not be the final word.
Soda makers and sellers say the ban unfairly singles out soft drinks as fat culprits. A beverage industry-led group says it's considering suing.
"The fix was in from the beginning, and the Mayor's handpicked board followed their orders by passing this discriminatory ban; but it has not passed with the support of New Yorkers," said Liz Berman, business owner and chairwoman of New Yorkers for Beverage Choices. "It's sad that the board wants to limit our choices. We are smart enough to make our own decisions about what to eat and drink."
The American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) issued a statement saying: "We concur that obesity is a significant health threat, and that obesity in the young points to earlier development of morbidities such as type 2 diabetes. Yet recent data indicate that, in New York City at least, the proportion of young school children who are obese has actually declined somewhat in the last few years. We note that this welcome decline has occurred without the institution of any governmental restrictions on beverage size."
