The Jewish holiday Rosh Hashanah begins at sundown and the unrest in the Middle East has led the NYPD to increase security at synagogues around the area.
The NYPD has announced additional resources for synagogues and Jewish communities over the high holidays. The NYPD said there is no specific threat to Jews in New York City, but the stepped-up patrols are done out of an abundance of caution.
Rabbi Dov Yonah Korn says the recent violence in the Middle East is something his constituents will be talking about and praying here in New York because they can't be overseas.
"It's on all of our minds, we want a peaceful world, this is our prayer," said Rabbi Korn.
Despite the increased security measures Mayor Bloomberg wished New Yorkers a Shanah tovah u'metukah:
"Tonight, New Yorkers will come together at synagogues, community centers and homes across the five boroughs to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and the beginning of a new year. Rosh Hashanah is a time for reflection and hope, as we look back on the year just past and the promise of the year ahead. I am proud of the tremendous progress we have made to create a better city - a place where people of all faiths can come to fulfill their dreams. As New Yorkers celebrate with friends and family, I look forward to what lies ahead."
The high holidays end with the Day of Atonement. Yom Kippur begins at sundown on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
