NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey's cash-strapped largest
city is getting less help from the state government this year, leaving a $2
million deficit to close by the end of the year.
Gov. Chris Christie announced Thursday that the city will get $10 million in
transitional aid this year.
That's $14 million less than the city requested and $22 million less than it
received last year.
Newark Business Administrator Julien Neals tells The Star-Ledger of Newark
(http://bit.ly/Vq5Gm4 ) the city's budget has been "stripped to the bare
minimum," but state and officials are looking for other places to cut.
Christie has been frustrated that Newark received $32 million in state help
last year, then had an $18 million surplus.
Newark Mayor Cory Booker is considering a run for governor next year.
