NEWARK, N.J.
(AP) — The man who spent three years wearing a wire for the FBI in one
of New Jersey's broadest corruption investigations is asking for
leniency because of mental illness.
Solomon Dwek is scheduled to
appear in federal court on Oct. 18 to receive a sentence of nine to 11
years for a $50 million bank fraud case that led to his decision to help
the government.
The Star-Ledger of Newark (http://bit.ly/QOY5uk ) reports Dwek's lawyer claims the former real estate investor has bipolar disorder and chronic high anxiety.
In court filings, his lawyer says federal prosecutors will also ask for a shorter sentence.
Dwek's assistance helped authorities arrest dozens and elected officials, five rabbis and a black-market kidney broker.
