TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Hurricane Sandy has knocked out
electricity to more than 2,300 customers in New Jersey so far. And officials
warn that number is only expected to grow.
Jersey Central Power & Light is reporting 2,175 homes and businesses are
without service early Monday. Most of them are in Monmouth County.
Atlantic Electric has 187 outages, mainly in Cumberland County.
The head of New Jersey's Board of Public Utilities says residents should
brace themselves for widespread and prolonged power outages.
BPU president Bob Hanna says the state's four public utilities expect high
winds and heavy rains to take their toll over the next few days.
Most of the outages will be due to downed trees hitting power lines and
flooding in substations.
