An off-duty NYPD officer died trying to save his family from rising flood waters during Hurricane Sandy on Sunday night.

Artur Kasprak, 28 was trying to move his family to safety inside his home on Doty Ave. at about 7 p.m.

Police say with flood waters surging into his house, Kasprzak was able to get six adults and a 15-month-old boy upstairs into his attic to escape the water.

Kasprzak then went to the basement to check for more people.  When he didn't come back upstairs one of the family members called 911.

NYPD SCUBA units raced towards the home but could not get there because of live power lines in the water.

At about 7 a.m. on Monday, Kasprzak's body was found in the basement.

Officer Kasprzak was assigned to the 1st Precinct in Manhattan and had six years on the job.

Previously, he served the city for one year as an NYPD Cadet, and was assigned to the 122 Pct. Detective Squad.
